What’s in Make Modern Issue 48?

When making a quilt, there are plenty of decisions. Do you use a pattern or design it yourself? What techniques will you use? Will you use pre-cut fabrics, or curate your own prints? How will you construct your quilt top – in rows, columns, quadrants? Will you lay out the blocks in a grid, or go a bit more abstract? How will you quilt it? Will you bind it by hand or machine? And the decisions you make on one quilt may be quite different for another. You don’t have to choose a particular technique for your whole entire quilting life, just for the project in front of you. Contrary to what you may have heard from an undercover quilt police, there is no right or wrong way. Choosing a certain method or technique doesn’t mean you are cheating or make you less of a quilter. If you take a concept and a stack of fabric and turn it into a finished quilt, then you are a quilting champion. We want to encourage you to enjoy your quilty journey, have fun with the process, and relish that feeling of snuggling under a me-made masterpiece!

We MEET the makers

In Issue 48, our first issue released onto our brand-new website, we MEET modern quilter Felie Hempfling from London and Granger whose stunning jewel-toned rainbow quilts are instantly recognisable and never fail to make us go ooh and ahh, Jodie Carleton from Ric Rac, an Australian designer who is very well-known for her adorable (and very popular) toy patterns, featuring all sorts of animals and cute characters, they make everyone want to try their hand at toy making, and Anke B. Calzada from Pasacana Designs, a self-taught quilter from Germany drawn to minimalistic design, who shares her exciting plans for her new business. Anke is a two-time Make Modern cover gal (she designed this issue’s lovely cover quilt, as well as the cover quilt from Issue 44) ♥

We MAKE and we MOTIVATE
