What’s in Make Modern Issue 56?

I have just hit publish on Make Modern Issue 56. That cover quilt is divine, and I think it goes perfectly with the sweet treat top left (are these iconic biscuits an Aussie only treat, or can you get them overseas?!). In this issue, we explore options … with a brand-new regular column where we’ll be looking at different aspects of quilting and how you can approach them.

“Whatever aspect of quilting it is – from fabric selection, to applique, to quilting, to binding, to hand sewing and much more – there is always more than one way to do something. And having options is wonderful! It’s a great way to save time, find your favourite way of doing something, outsource the tasks you don’t love, and generally get on with the task of making quilts with the most joy possible.” – Editor Jane

We’re all for having plenty of ways to do something and help you expand your quilting repertoire. Our second brand-new column for this year is Quilty Wellbeing, where modern quilter, author, teacher and wellness coach Sarah Ashford, will explore the idea that sewing is good for the soul, and how we can best look after our minds and bodies through creativity. This issue Sarah begins with getting organised for the new year, sharing her top tips for turning creative chaos into creative calm.

If you have been considering subscribing now is the perfect time to start. Subscribe today to beat the price rise, get instant access to this issue plus a year’s supply of quilting inspiration, tips and tricks to improve your quilting skills, connection with our international community of quilters, easy access and storage of your magazines via a simple link and great value!

Don’t just take my word for it, here are some recent reviews from readers:

  • “Fantastic variety and volume of new quilts in each issue – and all modern! I’m always impressed at how many new ideas there are every time. Magazine layout is also excellent. Eye candy! If only I could subscribe to some extra sewing time…!” – Janet, USA
  • “…it’s the best quilting magazine by a mile” – Sarah, UK
  • “Great patterns, good tips and tricks, access to wonderful modern quilts and techniques, seeing modern fabrics used creatively is inspiring. Thanks for providing such a great magazine! I love the fact it is Australian. I like the modern quilts rather than traditional ones. The patterns are clear and easy to follow.” – Aileen, Australia

We MEET makers

We MEET brand-new columnist Sarah Ashford who aims to inspire us to be mindful of our wellbeing while on our creative journeys, pattern designer Claudia Porter who has recently turned her quilting hobby into a full-time job, and UK-based quilter and author Sarah Hibbert whose striking quilts begin as paper collages! ♥

We MAKE and we MOTIVATE

Also in this issue, we MAKE a modern heart quilt perfect for your Valentine, a rainbow book sleeve to protect your tablet or current read on-the-go, a quilt designed for booklovers to log this year’s reads! plus a few quick projects for instant sewing satisfaction. There are articles on how to identify undercover quilt police, hand-quilting tips from an expert, a guide to choosing colours for your quilts, and a whole gallery featuring book-inspired quilts.

And inside every issue of Make Modern there’s a competition!

If this is your very first issue, welcome to our community – we’re quilters who love fabric (chopping it up, stitching it back together, and some of us even enjoy just petting it in our spare time), colour, fresh designs, and a bit of quirky Aussie fun thrown into the mix. It’s never too late to start reading, and this issue is a great one to start with. Get your copy now and see for yourself what we’re all about. If you have been reading since the very start and this is your tenth year and 56th issue – thank you – we love you! And if you’re in the middle somewhere, thank you for journeying with us ♥

And one of the best things about being independently published is that every time you email, you’ll get to chat directly with a fellow quilters from our little team. If you ever have any questions, I’m just an email away and would love to hear from you. I hope wherever you are in the world, you are safe, sheltered, and surrounded by fabric.
