Today we’re throwing back to Make Modern Issue 38 and this striking high-contrast quilt by Nic Vaughan from Craftapalooza Designs.
The Monochrome Peel Quilt was designed by Nic with the Rob Peter to Pay Paul quilt block as a reference. The blocks are hand-pieced, then machine-pieced together and hand-quilted big stitch style to finish.
Nic is an incredible hand piecer, and has put together some brilliant videos with her tips and tricks for hand piecing.
Nic chose to sew the binding to the front with her machine, then flipped and hand-stitched it down on the back.
If you would like some help with quilt binding, here’s a great binding tutorial from Lauren from Molly and Mama, a Make Modern designer. Lauren covers all of the quilt binding basics – straight edges or curved, how much binding you need, making your binding, attaching your binding, and stitching it down.
Nic calls herself a hand piecer at heart, but if you’re not such a fan of hand sewing, the curves are super gentle so the blocks can definitely be machine sewn and quilted instead.
