Jane Kelly
Q: What’s your main sewing machine?
A: My Juki TL-98P, Optimus Prime. He’s a total workhorse. But I’ve also started collecting vintage machines and are besotted by the machines of the ‘50s and ‘60s, so that’s quite the rabbit hole.
Q: Do you prefer solids or prints?
A: Prints all the way, and my favourite is blenders in rainbow tones. I love those basics that can fit in with all the other fabrics seamlessly.
Q: Do you machine or hand bind your quilts?
A: I almost always machine bind.
Q: So you use recycled fabrics in your quilts?
A: I’ve used denim a few times and made some memory quilts from my dad’s jeans and flannel shirts. It’s something I’d like to explore more.
Q: Do you do any other crafts?
A: I also scrapbook, though less than I used to. Quilting is definitely my main hobby, though I’m thinking about getting back into making clothes.

Q: Do you starch your quilt blocks?
A: I’m admittedly not a perfectionist when it comes to things like matching points – though they do look nice when it happens! – so, I don’t typically spend the time to starch my fabric or blocks unless absolutely necessary. This is pretty representative of my general quilting philosophy that aims to minimise steps that don’t create impact that’s important to me personally (or just aren’t enjoyable), though I must accept the outcomes!
Q: How do you organise your fabric stash?
A: Organise? Ha! Well, I do end up trying to arrange my stash somewhat by colour every several months, which very quickly comes undone by my tendency to create stacks of potential fabric pulls (which may or may not get used) and also by my habit of hastily throwing fabric wherever it fits.
Q: What is your local area famous for?
A: Salt Lake City, Utah, USA is most well-known as the settling place of the Mormon Pioneers and the religious centre of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS). While not religious myself, I appreciate all the city’s history around that aspect and especially love taking advantage of the beautiful landscapes and outdoor recreation that Utah is famous for: skiing, fishing, camping and hiking in its Mighty Five national parks.
Q: What’s your go-to sewing time entertainment?
A: I’m a complete podcast nerd, so when I’m not cramming in an audiobook before an upcoming book club meeting, I’ll most likely be listening to podcasts such as Ten Percent Happier, Dare to Lead, Freakonomics Radio, Hidden Brain or TED Talks Daily.
Q: Is quilting your day job?
A: There was a period of time when I decided to focus on my business full time, but it ultimately did not provide me all of the fulfillment – or income – that I was looking for. So, my current day job is in Economic Development with Salt Lake County, and I now fit in sewing, designing, and business management activities on nights and weekends.

Shereece Spain
Q: Who taught you how to quilt?
A: Initially, I tried to teach myself pre-YouTube. Many years later I picked it back up when I first moved to a new state.
Q: How do you organise your fabric stash?
A: Mini bolts if they’re at least one yard, plastic storage drawers for scraps by colour or speciality, and fat quarters in their own drawer.
Q: What’s your go-to sewing time entertainment?
A: Music. Classical if I need to concentrate. Otherwise, whatever music playlist I’m in the mood for that day
Q: How would you describe your quilty style?
A: Modern, sophisticated, large pieces.
Q: Do you have a quilt group you regularly meet up with?
A: Yes, currently the Augusta Modern Quilt Guild
