What’s in Make Modern Issue 46?

From little things, big things grow. Babies turn into children, then adults. Baby quilts turn people into quilters, then quilt-based business owners. Just look at us … and I know a large number of our subscribers also have their own small businesses!

We MEET the makers

Quite coincidentally, all three makers featured in this issue – Brooke Shankland of Eudaimonia Studio, Lynett Muhaso of Lyns Avenue, and Jo Westfoot from The Crafty Nomad – all began their quilting journeys when they jumped in with both feet to make quilts for new babies. And the significance here is not necessarily the baby quilt, though they’re a great project for new quilters due to their size, it’s the willingness of all these makers to give it a go. MEET them in Issue 46 and hear how they got bitten by the quilting bug.

We MAKE and we MOTIVATE

Also in Issue 46, we MAKE some beautiful rainbow quilts, and a rainbow pennant flag to store your pin collection. If you’re got a fave feature fabric in your stash, there’s a quilt to help you make it sing! And there’s an awesome pattern for you to make your own eye-catching New York Beauty quilt. I dare you not to fall in love with NYB quilts after seeing the stunners in our gallery.

All this plus tips and tricks from our expert quilting team to get you up and raring to quilt. Our DIY Design columnist Tara tells us how she turns a conversation with a customer into a quilt, and shows her must-see concept plans. I would struggle to choose a favourite. Can you guess which fabric range she’s going to use before she shares it next issue? Alyce continues the curves in quilts discussion with tips for sewing more complex and improv curves, challenging you to get your curve on! Our Creative Director Kristy explores quilts that have been featured on screen, in movies and TV shows, and chats to their makers about how it all happened. Our Fabric expert Wendy delivers a new cloth confidential column, with fabrics all featuring food! And Alyce marks the halfway mark in our Colour Me Happy Club with an exploration into colour value. Our quilting expert HollyAnne gives us some great options for quilting wheel motifs – think any round-ish shapes like circles, hexagons, octagons, and even some Dresden plates. And Editor Jane continues to help us all smash our fabric stash with a chat about how to use a hero or focal print to bring your scraps together to create a cohesive, rather than totally scrappy, scrap quilt.

And thanks to one of our readers for giving us the push we needed, you may notice a little update that should make it easier to quickly go to an article or pattern that interests you most, with each of the articles/patterns in our contents pages now clickable. Thanks Kristy!

About the Author

Lara is Make Modern’s Business Manager. Mama to two kidlets and a well-loved pup, Lara started quilting as a crafty outlet from her previous day job as a scientist. While quilting is Lara’s first love, her drive to live sustainably is a lifestyle on its own.
